Israel: Netanyahu set to step down as PM, agreement in opposition to form new government


Jerusalem: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now almost certain to step down from the post of PM in Israel. Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid told President Reuven Rivlin that he had enough support to form a coalition government. He told the President of Israel that the government would include political parties such as Yesh Atid, Kahol Lavan, Israel Beitinu, Labor, Yamina, New Hope, Meretz and Ra’am.

Naftali Bennett to become prime minister

Yir Lapid said that Naftali Bennett would first take over as prime minister. He said, ‘‘ According to Clause 13(b) of Basic Law: The Government, I take great pride in informing you that I have been successful in forming the Government. The government will be an alternative government in accordance with clause 13(a) of the Basic Law: The Government and MK (member of the ‘Knesset’) Naftali Bennett will take over as the first prime minister.’’

Yesh Ateed party leader said, ‘‘ President, I want to assure you that this government will work to serve all citizens of Israel, including those who are not its members, will respect those who protest and all parts of Israeli society. Will do whatever it takes to unite.’’
