Odisha Cricket Association Chief Executive Officer Subrata Bahera said, "He (Wasim Jaffer) will be the head coach. He has been signed for two years." The decision was taken after a meeting of the Association’s Cricket Advisory Committee. Jaffer will replace former state captain Rashmi Ranjan Parida who was with the team for two seasons. Bahera said in the statement, "Besides cricket development for all age groups, he (Jaffer) will also be a part of the coach development program in the state."

Wasim Jaffer, the highest run-scorer in the history of Ranji Trophy, will take over as the head coach of a state team for the second time. Earlier, after retiring in March 2020, he coached Uttarakhand. But he resigned after a dispute with the Sangh. 

Excellent first class career

Wasim Jaffer, who played 31 Tests for India, has 1,410 runs in 260 matches of first class cricket at an average of 50.67. During this, 57 centuries and 91 half-centuries came out of his bat. His highest score was 314 * runs. Jaffer has also scored a double century in Test cricket for India. In Tests for India, his bat scored five centuries and 11 half-centuries.
